ZUBAT dropped out of the sky in November 2009 to place second in the John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry, and now roams the country spouting his deluded lit-hop and wandering around forests.

2010… Liam Johnson, who is half English and half Canadian, moved to Wales when he was five and grew up in the countryside on a smallholding. He has four older siblings, one if whom used to read him poems instead of bedtime stories. Liam started writing his own poems and lyrics at fifteen, progressing to blocks of prose-poetry in the summer of 2007 after reading Jack Kerouac for the first time. He states the Beat Generation as his most significant influence. Liam is now studying at UWIC in Cardiff for a degree in English and Creative Writing. He is also currently attending open mic nights and writing a book. Liam won the Runner-up Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2009 John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry.

When Jackie Hagan was 6, she danced out of an oversized Mother’s day card to the tune of war of the worlds as a gift to her Mum, she hasn’t changed much. She facilitates creativity sessions for adults with mental health needs, has edited and appeared in numerous anthologies, had her first play ‘Help!’, a surreal take on psychiatrity, staged at Contact Theatre Manchester and owns a blue peter badge for a bring-and-buy sale she never actually got round to doing. Her second collection of poetry ‘The Wisdom of the Jumble Sale’ has just been published by flapjack press.

In 2010…

Mab Jones is a performance poet from Cardiff. Winner of the John Tripp Spoken Poetry Audience Award, and finalist in the recent Farrago UK Slam Championships, she is sometimes referred to as a ‘burlesque poet’, sometimes as a ‘comic-political poet’. Her works veers from the darkly funny to the shockingly rude, from the delightfully naughty to the daringly satirical. She has performed all over the UK, supporting poets and comics like John Hegley and Lucy Porter, represented Wales at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC last summer with national poet Gillian Clarke, and recently had her first play performed at the Wales Millenium Centre. “Delightful comic verse, articulate and imaginative” – Three Weeks “Absolutely brilliant” – The Guardian “She is fantastic” – BBC Radio Wales

The Trip Festival is very proud to welcome folk legend Beverley Martyn to play on Sunday 29th May at the Vaynol Estate, Bangor.

One of the most enigmatic singers of the 1960s, Beverley was discovered by Moody Blues producer Denny Cordell and taught to play guitar by Bert Jansch, a leading figure in the British folk music revival of the 1960s.

When Paul Simon heard the young Beverley sing he was so impressed he took her to New York. The resulting partnership with Paul, both personal and professional, saw Beverley tour the US with Simon and Garfunkel playing major venues and festivals, and she lent her clear English tones to the recording of Simon and Garfunkel song “Faking It”.

Beverley’s own previous recordings include two Witchseason LPs – ‘Stormbringer!’ and ‘Road to Ruin’ with late ex-husband John Martyn – and the couple’s blend of English folk and Americana coupled with Bev’s smoky voice made the pair the king and queen of the UK’s new folk rock scene. Beverley also collaborated with Led Zeppelin legend Jimmy Page, who played guitar on her two pop singles with Decca’s sister record label Deram.

Beverley’s long-awaited new album is currently being recorded at the Les Cousins Music studio in Llandudno, where she’s been recording with ex-Oasis and Paul Weller guitarist Matt Deighton and producer Mark Pavey, the studio’s owner.

Beverley is thrilled to be playing a retrospective set of songs from her long career at the Trip Festival, in the beautiful surrounds of the Vaynol Estate and the shadow of Mount Snowdon.

The Trip Festival will be held at Vaynol near Gwynedd on 27-29 May. Vaynol, a site with over 1000 years of history and 1000 acres of walled parkland, gardens and agricultural estate on the banks of the Menai straights in Gwynedd, North Wales, will provide the perfect location for The Trip’s laid back, family friendly three-day event.

The Trip boasts a mix of live music and DJs, with a dance tent with the musical emphasis on the Balearic and cosmic boogie vibes, along with a sprinkling of the latest house, techno and electronic music. This year, the master of ambient chill MixMaster Morris will have his own area which will also feature a selection of poetry, circus performances, workshops, therapies and other family-friendly activities.

The line-up will showcase the Trip’s trademark mix of folk and psychedelia, internationally renowned DJs and British and international signed and undiscovered acts, all played out against the backdrop of the magnificent Mount Snowdon.
Cardiff indie heroes Colorama will play alongside house favourites Terry Farley, the Idjut Boys and Ashley Beedle, who after playing last year’s inaugural event described it as a “New York loft party meeting a good old British rave,” and predicted The Trip would become an important fixture in the festival calendar. Folk legend Beverley Martin will bring the proceedings to a close on Sunday afternoon.
Friday night will be devoted to some of Wales’s finest bands on the main stage and, as last year, the three days will feature a wide variety of Welsh artists and performers. Cardiff-based indie underground heroes Colorama will headline Friday night on the main stage, where they will be joined by fellow Cardiff residents Houdini Dax, playing their trademark psychedelic garage-rock. Alternative-country pop ensemble Gintis, Mr Huw and Pulco from nearby Rhyl will complete the all-Welsh line up.
House music legend Terry Farley has been announced as the headline DJ for Friday night’s Acid House Party, with Idjut Boys filling the same slot on Saturday in what is rumoured to be Wales’s oldest barn.
Saturday’s band line-up includes Norwegian dance music outfit Mungolian Jet Set, Cardiff bi-lingual pop-rockers Race Horses, and Gordon Anderson, ex Beta Band and front man of The Aliens, with his new band The Lone Pigeon – expect the unexpected.
The Saturday main stage will see Jez Kerr, front man and bassist with legendary Factory Records outfit A Certain Ratio, bring his melodic post-punk sound, indie-rockers outfit The Loungs, as well as The Tea Street Band, John Stammers, The Wicked Whispers and By The Sea.
Saturday night in the dance arena will be headlined by the aforementioned disco legends the Idjut Boys, with support from Soft Rocks and a host of other cosmic disco divas.
Folk legend Beverley Martyn will headline Sunday on the main stage and will be joined by funk and soul soldiers Smoove & Turrell , The Wild Eyes, Richard O’Flynne, Stealing Sheep, Hacia Dos Veranos, Drymbago and a late afternoon Sunday Service with the great Ashley Beedle and Brian G Morrison.
Sunday night in the dance arena will be hosted by underground dance music champions WoNk, led by long time Balearic luminary Kelvin Andrews. We will be releasing the theme for the WoNk PaRTy shortly. Dressing up is compulsory if you want to WoNk!
Mixmaster Morris will host his own blend of ambient chill throughout the weekend, and a dedicated children’s area will feature circus skills, workshops and other family-friendly activities.
Weekend adult camping is £70 for the weekend, with children under 10 entering free.
Limited day tickets are available for the Saturday and Sunday.

Disco Mums are an all female Manchester based DJ collective of seasoned clubbers (now proud parents) who, courtesy of the babysitting skills of a team of generously paid helpers, are still out. Having taken over the decks at clubs around Manchester (and increasingly nationally) they pass the headphones generously (no male egos here) spinning a collective set of sly gems, treasured classics and out and out bombs from the disco, soul, funk and house genres. They’ve danced to them like their lives depended on it and – using their extensive knowledge of what works and what doesn’t – they’re now playing them. And on real plastic too.

Disco Mums are the uniquely beautiful Jane Slack, Jane Kettleton. Emma Joyce, Géraldine Garrabet, and Julie Wills (babysitter).

They’ve so far graced Electric Elephant, That Amazing Thing! Electrik bar, Circle Bar, Nook Bar (where they currently have a residency) as Disco Mums but have individually played all over the planet. They’re now bringing it home.
